Five mistakes that get an HTML5 banner rejected

For people who upload HTML5 banners to an ad server (the platform that publishes the ads): the five technical details that are most often overlooked.

A banner can look perfect on your screen and still be rejected. The reason is almost always a detail nobody checked. These are the five most common ones.

1. An external resource

Many platforms do not allow the banner to request files from outside the .zip, such as a font. Include it inside the package.

2. No clickTag

The destination link must be read from a variable that the platform defines, called clickTag. If it is written as a fixed value, clicks cannot be counted.

“Checking before you upload takes minutes; fixing a rejection takes days.”

3. File size

Each platform sets a maximum. Measure the complete .zip and leave some margin.

4. A size that does not match

The banner dimensions must be exactly those of the contracted space. One pixel more or less can be enough for the piece to fail review.

5. Unlimited animation

Platforms usually limit the total duration and the number of repetitions of an animation. Check the platform’s specifications before you consider the piece finished.

Before uploading

  • Open the banner in the browser.
  • Test the click.
  • Measure the total weight.
