Lesson 2 of 5

The anatomy of a banner: size, file, and clickTag

Every HTML5 banner that an ad server accepts has three elements that can’t be missing: the main file, the declared size, and the clickTag.

The main file

The .zip must have an index.html file at its root. If you put the banner inside a folder before compressing it, the ad server won’t find it.

The declared size

The banner states how big it is with a tag in the <head>. It must match the space where it will run.

index.html
<meta name="ad.size" content="width=300,height=250">

The clickTag

The destination link is not written in stone. The banner reads a variable, clickTag, that the platform defines, and uses it when someone clicks. That way the platform can count every click.

index.html
var clickTag = "https://your-site.com";
window.open(window.clickTag, "_blank");
In practice. The address you leave in the file is for testing: many platforms replace it when serving the ad.
